Wilfredo R. Ramos, M.D., FACOG
“Physical health is nothing without spiritual and mental health.”
I wrote my first prescription at the age of six. My mom still has it.
As a child, I was very ill and hospitals were my second home. I felt safe there, and to me, my doctor was a superhero. There was never another profession I wanted to pursue.
I was supposed to be a thoracic surgeon. It was a done deal. I was going to be a big-time cardio thoracic surgeon. But, on my last day of rotation, an OB/GYN invited me into his OR to help with a C/Section. I had not completed my OB rotation and I thought, "Sure, how hard can this be?" The sheer joy in that room, the tears, the baby crying, the incredible happiness, just did it for me. No one had died. No legs were amputated. No somber news to be given to the family. Just pure joy. I was hooked.
Dr. Ramos earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry from Loyola University, New Orleans, in 1992. In 1996, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Central Caribbean University School of Medicine, Puerto Rico, and went on to complete his residency training at the Tulane University School of Medicine Obstetrics and Gynecology Program in 2000.
Dr. Ramos is also proud to have served as an active duty U.S. Air Force physician for five years after his residency, where he was appointed instructor for two of the largest Air Force Obstetrics and Gynecology Training Programs, located at Kessler and Travis Air Force Bases. He was awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal for meritorious service during his tenure, and received an Honorable Discharge after completing his active duty tour.
Currently, and over the last two years, Dr. Ramos has become one of the most active da Vinci Robotic surgeons in the Northern California region, performing over 25% of all da Vinci cases in all specialties combined at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, California. He performed the first da Vinci procedure at Mercy, and was instrumental in helping develop the program from all angles, including efficiency, scheduling and staff training.
He has attended such prestigious courses as the Intuitive Advanced Gynecologic Robotic Surgery Course, under the tutelage of Dr. Arnold Advincula, world renowned da Vinci surgeon. In February of 2011, Dr. Ramos became one of two physicians in the Sacramento Region, and only one of 50 nationwide, to become certified by the Intuitive Surgical Corporation as a Master Gynecologic da Vinci Surgeon. He continues to broaden his expertise by providing proctoring for other physicians who are new to robotic surgery, as well as giving lectures and attending seminars on every aspect of Robotic Surgery.
Dr. Ramos is extremely passionate about patient care and patients’ rights. He believes all patients should be treated as individuals, and that a doctor’s practice should be about quality, not quantity.
Although his patients are his main priority, during his free time, Dr. Ramos, who is an avid cyclist, shares his passion for sports with his wife, who is also an OB/GYN, and his three children.
